Honors Study Abroad programs offer Carolina undergraduates the opportunity to live and study in some of the world′s great cities. Like Burch Field Research Seminars, most of these programs are led by UNC faculty. Students also take courses with distinguished faculty from some of the host countries′ most renowned universities.

 

Honors Program in London
Semester: Fall, Spring
Faculty director: Dr. Stephen Leonard (Department of Political Science, Fall 2008)
Eligibility: Open to all UNC-CH undergraduates with at least sophomore status and 3.0 GPA or higher
Courses offered: various, including British Literature (Shakespeare, Victorian, or other), Contemporary British Politics, The History of World War II, The European Community: Economics, Politics, and Policy Making (Fall only), The History of Science in London (Fall only), Classical Music and its Cultural Contexts in Britain (Fall only), British Cinema since World War II (Spring only), Art in London and the Contemporary Art Scene

Honors Program in Cape Town
Semester: Fall
Faculty director: Dr. Lisa Lindsay (Department of History, Fall 2008)
Eligibility: Open to all UNC-CH undergraduates with at least sophomore status and 3.0 GPA or higher
Courses offered: Internship and Research (6 credits), South Africa in African History (3 credits, 2008 only), Contemporary Southern Africa (3 credits)

William D. Weir Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies (Beijing, China)
Semester: Spring, summer
Eligibility: Open to all UNC-CH undergraduates with at least sophomore status, a 3.2 GPA or higher, and at least 3 semesters of Chinese language
Courses offered: Intensive Chinese language (Spring, 12-18 credits), Internship (Summer)

Honors Program in London & Oxford
Semester: Summer (6 weeks, late June –early August)
Faculty director: Dr. Christopher Armitage (Department of English and Comparative Literature)
Eligibility: Open to all UNC-CH undergraduates with at least sophomore status and 3.0 GPA or higher
Courses offered: Shakespeare and Drama (3 credits), Independent Study (3 credits, optional)

Honors Program in Rome
Semester: Summer (5 weeks, early June – early July)
Faculty director: Dr. Lucia Binotti (Department of Romance Languages)
Eligibility: Open to all UNC-CH undergraduates with at least sophomore status and 3.0 GPA or higher
Courses offered: Art History (3 credits), Renaissance Literature (3 credits)

 

Burch Field Research Seminars offer some of the most adventurous, hands-on, off-campus educational experiences in the world. They showcase the relationship between faculty research and undergraduate education by combining traditional course work with active, experiential learning. A changing roster of seminars is offered each year in destinations both foreign and domestic. Please check back frequently for new offerings.

 

Burch Seminar in Washington, D.C.: Foreign and Domestic Policy Internship Program
Semester: Spring

Eligibility: Open to all UNC-CH undergraduates with at least sophomore status and 3.0 GPA or higher

Burch Seminar in Vienna, Bosnia and Croatia: International Organizations and the Balkans
Semester: Summer 2007, 2009 (8 weeks, early June – early August)
Faculty director: Dr. Bob Jenkins (Director, Center for Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies)
Courses offered: Conflict and Intervention in the Former Yugoslavia (3 credits), Selected Topics in Russian and Eastern European Studies (3 credits), Independent Research (3 credits)

Burch Seminar in Turkey: Layered Identities: Istanbul, Anatolia, and Turkishness
Semester: Summer 2008, 7 weeks (late May – early July)

Courses offered: Crossroads: History of Turkey (3 credits), Turkey: Culture and Identity (3 credits)
Eligibility: Open to all UNC-CH undergraduates with at least sophomore status and 3.0 GPA or higher

Burch Program in the Sierra Nevada: A Walking Classroom
Semester: Summer 2008, 6 weeks (late June – early August)

Courses offered: New Frontiers: Environment and Society in the US (3 credits), Mountain Biodiversity (4 credits)

Burch Seminar in New Orleans: The Culture and Literature of New Orleans
